It might've gotten caught in a downburst or something. Whatever happened, it is pretty clear that it would've hit the water on that trajectory, and the "power up" was not a normal aborted approach. They should just come clean and admit what happened.

Been on that beach and I cannot fathom the adrenaline junkies who do the 'hang on the fence', thing

That said, if the pilot hadn't aborted the landing and came around for another go, it would likely have been a extreme tragedy.
