It's called a Russian Join. It's secure but can leave a bit of a thickness in your knitting.

I prefer to respin the yarn. It's a bit trickier but if you need to join ends for lace knitting or somewhere where even a slight increase will show, try this spinner's trick:

I do it a LOT longer... about 2'. That sucker doesn't move anywhere. lol
