How can you compare two forms of a virus when you've had to rebuild large portions of the older one? How do you know that you yourself haven't caused the differences that you are seeing?

I have always said one of these days someone is going to backhoe a cut into a grave of someone that died of smallpox and we are going to be in trouble.

Old people with pox immunization scars will be drafted to work in the hospitals.

(Yea, yea, I know the immunization doesn't last for every at full strength but they will have some. And some is more than those who have none.)

It is very possible that something like smallpox circulated for thousands of years, and then mutated into something more virulent in the 1500s or 1600s. That would explain why some ancient mummies have scars that look like they were caused by smallpox. The suggested time frame is very interesting, though. Perhaps explorers went to the New World and brought back a different strain (or cousin) of an endemic virus and it mixed with the endemic virus to form something new. Then other explorers took the mutant strain back to the New World where it wreaked havoc. Just conjecture - I am no virologist, that's for sure.

How many are still alive that were vaxed? Not many, I'd bet. All those in my family are gone.

Don't wrestle with a pig. The pig enjoys it and you get muddy.

Jason was vaxxed too. Routine vaccinations ended in the US in 1972, which means anyone older than 45 is likely to have been innoculated. I believe it was one of the recommended sticks for people traveling to certain countries up until the early 1980's.

Us too. And I *think* we may have had boosters circa 1979, because we were going on an overseas tour-of-duty. DD1 was a toddler, and while she was supposed to have one, the doctor said complications from the shot were much more likely than any than she would contract smallpox in a European country! I don't remember if they falsified her shot record or noted that it was contraindicated because of her age.

I got mine before I went to kindergarten, so I remember it fairly well. They used a needle to scratch the skin rather than inject the vax. Then they covered the site with a plastic bubble which was taped down to my arm. The skin blistered up and then scabbed over. The plastic bubble stayed on until the scab fell off and revealed a nickle sized scar. I can barely see mine now.
