Default Dano's 2016 Movie Picks

Hello everyone! This year was again a bit of a disappointment, as there were no "wow--definitely 10 out of 10!" type films. Here's the list of the films I saw in the theatre in 2016, with brief reviews of the favorites at the bottom:

1) 10 Cloverfield Lane
2) The Accountant
3) Arrival
4) Bridge of Spies
5) Café Society
6) Carol
7) Creed
8) Deadpool
9) The Dressmaker
10) Dirty Grandpa
11) Eddie The Eagle oops, I forgot to insert "Elvis & Nixon" here
12) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them *Favorite Action/Adventure
13) Finding Dory
14) Ghostbusters (2016)
15) The Girl on the Train
16) Hail, Caesar!
17) The Handmaiden *Favorite foreign
18) The Hateful Eight
19) Hello, My Name is Doris
20) Hunt for the Wilder People
21) Jackie
22) Keanu *Favorite Comedy
23) Kevin Hart: What Now?
24) The Light Between Oceans *Biggest disappointment
25) The Lobster *Best off-beat and quirky
26) Manchester By the Sea
27) Masterminds
28) Me Before You
29) Midnight Special
30) Mike and Dave need Wedding Dates
31) Money Monster
32) Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
33) The Nice Guys
34) Nocturnal Animals
35) Race (2016)
36) The Revenant
37) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
38) Sausage Party *Favorite animated
39) Star Trek: Beyond
40) Star Wars: The Force Awakens
41) Swiss Army Man
42) Tickled
43) Wiener *Favorite Documentary
44) Zootopia

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them: Actor Eddy Redmayne enters the Harry Potter universe. Guaranteed action and fun!

The Handmaiden: The South Korean director Chan-wook Park (of “Oldboy”) really knows how to mess with your head. The timeline shift is used brilliantly as a slow-reveal—just when you think you’ve figured out the plot, some really weird things start to happen. Warning, as it contains very graphic lesbian scenes.

The Light Between Oceans: The great Michael Fassbender, Rachel Weisz and another one of my imaginary girlfriends Alicia Vikander—what could go wrong? This film is proof that you can have great actors, but if the screenplay is poor, well, the movie is disjointed and unsatisfying.

The Lobster: A bizarre and disturbing dystopia where everyone’s supposed to have a partner, or be turned into an animal. And with my imaginary girlfriend Rachel Weisz in it, how could it go wrong? It doesn’t’.

Sausage Party: I laughed all the way through it, even during the insane orgy scene. It’s a very clever story line—what if all the products in the grocery store were living beings, duped into thinking that humans are their salvation?

Weiner: Almost all documentaries are about the past, with still shots or stock footage for support. Politician Anthony Weiner’s denouement unfolds right in front of the camera, in real time. His wife’s reactions are painful but so real.

What did you like/dislike in 2016?

I haven't seen a movie at a theater in over 15 years but I like to read these lists so I know what to watch for on TV.

No Captain America - Civil War?

I think you covered the all other shows I saw in the theatre
Deadpool
Finding Dory
Force Awakens
Rogue One

Though I did see Zootopia, Bridge of Spies and Star Trek Beyond at home

Hey Toner! I don't do comic-book based movies, generally--it's just not my thing.

I saw "La La Land" last night, but it wasn't worth my time.

Still waiting for a bunch of late 2016 movies to come to Bugtussle. Thanks for your list! I'll have mine ready around Oscar time.

Yes, I've only seen one or two of the movies predicted to be Oscar nominees for best picture, so we both will have lots of work to do in the next 6 weeks.
