Default Forget what you were taught in chemistry class: Bizarre new helium compound may rewrite science books

Quote:
Helium was thought to be a noble gas because it was unreactive
But researchers have managed to create a helium sodium compound
The compound can only exist under high pressures such as on other planets
The scientists say their work marks a 'new frontier of chemistry'
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...nce-books.html

An international team of scientists have created a new compound
which is made of both helium (graphic pictured) and sodium atoms

Don't try this at home!

It's still a noble gas. The nobles are nonreactive under anything but extreme circumstances (since their electron configuration is in a very low energy, stable state), but there have been compounds with xenon, krypton, and radon (other nobles) before.

In stark contrast to their neighboring halogens - the whores of the periodic chart.
