Don't wrestle with a pig. The pig enjoys it and you get muddy.

Default 6 Castles that cost less than an apartment in NYC

Which would you rather own?

This castle in the Pyrenees:

or this 1 bedroom apartment in Manhattan:

(The apartment is actually listed at 38k more than the castle.)

I wonder if the upkeep on the chateau is as much as the annual property tax on the apartment?

It probably balances out, Susie... apartments not only have taxes they usually have an HOA type fee associated with them too, and when it comes to apartments and condos those fees are getting VERY pricey.

This one is near me. It doesn't look as nice as this, anymore...although it's only recently been abandoned and is only now beginning to show wear and tear from neglect.

The castle as it is, today; http://www.sudouest.fr/2012/10/11/mo...46231-3976.php They only show the worst pictures. Not one shot of the remaining beauty or of the huge reception rooms, the beautiful carved wood bar, the marble staircase, OR the three meter high interior wooden double doors.

It used to be owned by the ELF oil company, and used to host visiting dignitaries, etc.. After that, it was owned by a company called 'The Castle Boys', and used to make gay porn films (I sneaked a tour through the place and found an old application form for the actors. Every clause possible was there to sign away; they must've had really good lawyers).

After that, a Polish/English couple bought it, but they seemed a bit shady and ran off in the middle of the night, leaving the place to go to ruin.

There is a group, headed by a local government counselor, that is trying to get up the money to buy the place and stop the ruin. I have written to him and told him where he could find 'certain' items that have been stolen from the castle (That Mid Life Crisis of mine, and GOG, the Bandit...I know where he hid the beautiful three meter high interior oak doors, the ones that led into the reception rooms)("Dear Mr. Habib; about that castle you are trying to rescue...I think I can help you in your restoration efforts..."). I told him that the local cops would soon be able to get him back the stuff. No answer just yet from him, though.

There are so many very nice big castles and fortresses that need loving owners. Monied owners, to be sure. But life is very nice here, much nicer than New York in many ways, I'm sure.

This is another chateau, one very near me.

It was bought by an Australian couple, right after 9/11. They paid about 350 thousand dollars for it at the time. The dad was a builder, and they came over with wife, husband, three kids, two yorkies, a cat, a nanny, an electrician, a carpenter, and a plumber. Sayed a few years and sold it for about a million. Nowadays it's a bed and breakfast, and I almost don't recognize it from when our friends, Kim and Peter, owned it (except for the red carpeted double staircase).

Here is a beauty, just a few miles from me. It's been made into apartments.
