Default Valley sun mirror shines light in winter

Valley sun mirror shines light in winter

High mountains surrounding town block limited sun

RJUKAN, Norway (NBC/EBU) - Here comes the sun for some folks in Norway.

Norway doesn't get much sunlight in the wintertime, but people who live in the valley town of Rjukan see even less because of the high mountains that surround the town.

They decided to bring the average of four- to five hours of daylight in wintertime to their town. They've built the world's largest solar mirrors to reflect sunlight into the valley.

Martin Anderson said it's the culmination of a 12-year dream for him. He got the idea from the mirrors used for the same purpose in the valley town of Viganella, Italy.

The Norwegian mirrors are larger than Viganella's and will officially begin to operate at the end of this month.
Tourist Michael John Lewis likes it.

"It's a good idea, brings tourists, I think, and money to Rjukan," said Lewis.

The town's tourism director said that they've received inquiries from Brazil, China and Australia because of the mirrors.

“The price of freedom is the willingness to do sudden battle anywhere, any time and with utter recklessness.”
