Default Could doctors transplant a HEAD onto a body in 2 years' time? Italian surgeon confident he can perform £7.5milllion operation

Italian surgeon confident he can perform £7.5milllion operation
Quote:
Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero believes head transplants are possible
The techniques allows the patient's head be grafted onto a healthy body
Paralysed patients and those with incurable illness could benefit
However, each operation will cost an estimated £7.5million to complete
Dr Canavero said both heads would be removed at the same time
He would then glue the patient's head onto the donor's body
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...her-Reeve.html

I was torn as to whether I should post this story in the Medical area or Outside The Box.

What's the point? He'd end up with a sick (anti-rejection drugs forever) quadriplegic.

Limited use I would guess, and dharma points out.

(disregarding the ethics of the situation)
Maybe on a very brilliant person who mind was still good but body was going to cause death. And you could get a donor body in excellent shape. And if someone had the funds to pay for 100% long term care for a quad, anti-rejection drugs, etc.

No one has even come close to repairing a spinal cord. If you could do that there would be all kinds of para and quads who could be repaired.

But maybe I am wrong about the spinal cord

http://www.surgicalneurologyint.com/...ulast=Canavero

HEAVEN: The head anastomosis venture Project outline for the first human head transplantation with spinal linkage (GEMINI)

In 1970, the first cephalosomatic linkage was achieved in the monkey. However, the technology did not exist for reconnecting the spinal cord, and this line of research was no longer pursued. In this paper, an outline for the first total cephalic exchange in man is provided and spinal reconnection is described. The use of fusogens, special membrane-fusion substances, is discussed in view of the first human cord linkage. Several human diseases without cure might benefit from the procedure.

Cool! This would solve the working penis problem in transgender female to male subjects. Do you get your choice of body?

Of course, the donor body would have had to die with a healthy body...perhaps of head injury.

I on't even want to think of the myriad complexities involved in such a procedure; not least of which is how to keep the brain properly oxygenated, making the Lord knows how many correct nerve connections...

Yep, the handwaving on that score that Heinlein did in Fear No Evil approached ceiling-fan speeds.

Doctor planning world's first head transplant says he is preparing for his 'Frankenstein' surgery by REANIMATING human corpses
Quote:
Dr Sergio Canavero plans to do the first human head transplant next year
His team now plan to conduct 'Frankenstein' tests using human corpses
They will use electricity to stimulate the nerves in dead bodies after first cutting and then reconnecting the spinal cord as a test of their technique
Russian man who has volunteered to have the first transplant has also revealed that his girlfriend is opposed to him having the operation

Scientists carry out head transplant on a RAT to create bizarre two-headed rodent in practise run for controversial human experiment
Quote:
Researchers used three rats for operations: a donor, recipient, and blood supply
It resulted in two-headed animals, with head of smaller rat attached to recipient
The team says they were able to do this without damaging the donor brain tissue
Controversial procedure comes ahead of plan for first human head transplant
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...plant-RAT.html

In the disturbing experiment, researchers in China affixed the
heads of smaller, ‘donor’ rats onto the backs of larger rats, creating
two-headed animals that lived an average of just 36 hours

Dr. Canavero is planning Moreau experiments for later this year.

Ross you could always get a transplant down there with a soft shelled turtle head. Besides being a long extension you would have an extra pair of eyes, a way to hold a bolt like an extra pair of hands and it would be able to pull the zipper down all by itself.
