This trip looks wonderful. I absolutely LOVE road trips and your girls are at such a great age for one. I'm so glad you had this opportunity.

We were going to try one last trip like this with the Farletts this summer, but Fartlett Major has a summer job and Fartlett Minor is getting ready for his freshman year at college, so it didn't work out.

Love the pics!
By the way, in an earlier thread I suggested driving through Central California instead of the coast. You might want to rethink that. Almond harvesting is on with a vengeance and the air quality is beyond nasty.

Road trip on a road trip. Instead of going to Universal Studios we decided to go south today

Quick stop at Oceanside

100th Anniversary of San Diego zoo

Polar bears in the zoo? It's hard enough keeping away from the igloo back home...

Not Renée's favourite place

Back at the hotel, but a bit noisy across the street

Would they have been happy to just spend every day at a pool? :/

Kind of a laid-back day today.

We had manageable storage space for travelling but I had seen a lockable rear-hitch cargo box and thought it would be a handy travel addition for us

Other then that big purchase, we snooped around Anaheim, stopping at specialty stores, dollar stores, Walmart, Target, etc, to pick up things that caught our interest and that we can't get in Canada (or that would have crazy shipping costs)

Tried a new place for lunch

Tomorrow will be a full day of Disney...

I think it was just under $100 of fun - IIRC, Tracy said she's been wanting to go for about a year now

Final day at the Disney parks - first ride was a new one for us, the "Cars" themed raceway - lots of fun

Next up, the Tower of Terror. I was the only one who's tried it before, both girls were a bit scared but wanted to try it because it will be replaced in the fall with a Guardians of the Galaxy themed ride

Thinking "What are we doing here?" Since Renée doesn't like elevators and Emily hates sharp drops

Survived!

ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- A roller coaster at Disney California Adventure was shut down for the third time this summer, this time because a woman's purse fell on the tracks triggering an automatic shutoff, stranding a train full of riders for about 45 minutes.

Checked ou Sunday morning - Mrs. T attended a cooking class of Chef AJ, a lady she follows on the Internet, so I took the girls to Little Tokyo near downtown LA as they like to watch some Japanese anime

A wishing tree

A lot of the shops had no picture signs

Anime Jungle store

I'd vaguely heard of some of the shows the girls watch (eg. Sailor Moon, Spirited Away, Fairy Tales) but I'm guessing some are for a different target audience...

Pillows o_O

Cool pop (or is that soda?) dispenser

Ice cream stop after lunch

I hadn't noticed my parking spot wasn't the best block to be on - could smell the 420 a half block away... :/

Checked out a surplus store - is this the standard uniform for females in the army?

Heading out of the city

I LOVE Chef AJ - tell your wife I'm jealous she got to go to one of her seminars!
Glad you went the coastal route! I know the smoke is still bad in the Monterrey area but it looks pretty clear in S.F.! Have a great time!

My wife loves chef AJ too - she was asking the FB group a question about where to buy some item in LA and chef AJ asked her how long she was in town and then squeezed her into the class at her house. Met her husband and dog there too

Next personal class will be in November if you're interested

Toner, I have to admit that until my recent upgrade to a real ISP and data plan, I've only been able to view your pic threads in small bits and pieces. Packing a lunch to have while the thread loaded at slightly faster than dial-up wasn't helping my diet plan.

But now that I can actually see the pics, I can understand why everyone enjoys them so much. This thread especially has been a bright spot in what have lately been some pretty cloudy days for me.

Thank you, and your family, for sharing your lives and with me.

P.S. Unless something has changed, Cali is largely androgynous about the great soda/pop debate. But that will probably change soon. It's a good thing you took this road trip before those drinks become officially called "Death by Sugar in a Can" and banned outright by the good people of the state. You'd probably have had to spend half your vacation hours hunting for dealers willing to meet you on a dark street corner to score a couple of cans of warm root beer.

P.P.S. I'm glad that you weren't, ummm... accidentally left stranded on Alcatraz. If proof were needed, that definitely shows how much your family loves you!

Your trip to the Anime store reminded me of a Very Special Episode of 30 Rock, where Liz Lemmon hooked up with James Franco and his secret wife (an anime body pillow).

Those are Amaryllis - they spread like weeds!
Now you guys are in the area I grew up in. Enjoy the Redwoods but stay on clearly marked trails! You don't want to stumble across any pot gardens!

If you get a chance, and the elks aren't in rut, Fern Canyon is an amazing side trip. Jurassic Park was filmed there.

---------- Post added at 09:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 PM ----------

P.S. Also be on the lookout for banana slugs! Extra credit if your girls kiss one!
