I was afraid of this.

Don' know whether to wish them success or see them all shot.

Oric, I hope you and your family don't get caught up in any of that.

Our news just reported, (according to Turkey's government), that these actions aren't occurring under 'unified military leadership' - whatever that means.

It sounds like it means trouble.

Okay, according to our news, Erdrogan has said "a coup is underway". Promises 'the highest penalties' for those involved, etc. Tanks seen at Attaturk airport, Bosphorus bridges in Istanbul seized - presumably by the rebels & gunshots heard in Ankarra.

Oric will have the best info, obviously.

Oric, I heard Erdogan was going to offer Turkish citizenship to Syrian Arabs. I wonder what part, if any, that might have played in the Coup ?

Default Turkish PM says group within military involved in attempted coup

***Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says a group within the military was engaged in an attempted coup.

Yildirim told NTV television: "It is correct that there was an attempt."

Yildirim didn't provide details, but said Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy."

He added that those responsible would pay the highest price.

Earlier, military jets were heard flying over the capital of Ankara.

Media reports said ambulances were seen in front of Turkey's military headquarters.

Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge were both closed on Friday, local television channels reported...***

Also reports that local police are being disarmed by 'military' - not sure on whose side.

Turkey controls the Bosphorous. Bosphorous strait allows access to the Black Sea. The Russians have a large and significant Black Sea Fleet. There is potential room here for the Russians to get stupid and start playing some interventionist games under the pretext of defending free navigation through the Bosphorous.

FOX reported saying Edrogan "has been playing both sides against the middle" while trying to consolidate his own power, much like Morsi did with Egypt..,

Oliver North says about the same. What is happening to Erdogan is "much the same as what happened to Morsi in Egypt."
