>>>>>>>>Possible TWO severe quakes in NZ today??

Today: 6.2 magnitude earthquake near Kaikoura, Canterbury, New Zealand

Today: 7.8 magnitude earthquake near Amberley, Canterbury, New Zealand

New Zealand: Powerful 7.8-magnitude quake rocks South Island

New Zealand Civil Defense issued a tsunami warning Sunday following a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that jolted South Island. The tsunami threat covers the east coast of all New Zealand, officials said on Twitter, and waves could arrive immediately. "The tsunami may arrive in the Eastern Coast of the North Island shortly. Move inland or to higher ground immediately," the warning said.

[Previous story published 7:35 a, ET]

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked New Zealand's South Island on Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Christchurch city, which was devastated by a 2011 temblor.

A tsunami is possible, New Zealand Civil Defense said on Twitter, warning people near the island's east coast to move to higher ground.

remember to drop, cover and hold in any quakes - aftershocks will continue. stay safe. #eqnz pic.twitter.com/PXnsvOF63S
— MCDEM (@NZcivildefence) 13 November 2016

Sunday's quake struck the Pacific nation at a depth of 23 kilometers (14.2 miles), the USGS said. And at least three aftershocks hit near South Island, USGS said.

Christchurch was devastated by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in 2011, which killed 185 people and injured thousands. It reduced swathes of the city's historic area to rubble.

"The land has been very peaceful for many, many months. So this is bringing back all the rare memories," Chet Wah, owner of Designer Cottage B&B in Christchurch, told CNN.

"I just checked with all the guests. They are alright. It is scary. It's going to be a long night."

The first wave may not be the largest. Tsunami activity will continue for several hours. #eqnz

— MCDEM (@NZcivildefence) 13 November 2016

Christchurch has a population of over 340,000 people, according to the most recent government census.

New Zealand is regularly hit by earthquakes as it sits in a "collision zone" between the Indo-Australian and Pacific tectonic plates.
It is part of the Pacific's "Ring of Fire," where many earthquakes and volcano eruptions occur.

I have heard some eye witness accounts that would make your hair stand on end.
One woman in Auckland said she was woken by a sound like some-one tapping on the window and this was followed by all the doors opening and closing .
As the doors opened all the dogs in the city rushed out-side and began howling at the moon.
This was predicted by a few people as there is a "super moon"

I saw the vid of the twice flashing light on the horizon. Was unsure if it was the earthquake releasing energy or exploding electrical transformers. Looked too blue for transformers, IIRC.

The moon is close to earth at this moment and I am wondering if its
gravitational pull is a factor . However that may be NH rather than SH.
( I do not want to spend time checking - sorry )

Quote:
Those that appreciate a beautiful night sky will be in for a treat.
On November 14, the moon will be in the closest proximity to Earth in 70 years.
In being so close, it will provide some delightful visuals for stargazers
and non-stargazers, alike.

More detail here

Pics and video of earthquakes lights. Cool. Don't think these are transformers blowing.

http://metro.co.uk/2016/11/14/myster...truck-6256459/

I wonder if earthquake lights are more prevalent depending on local geology or depth of quake.

Their pre EQ test trench moved by 9 metres(29 feet)> More info< >even more photos<

NZ now one of the most studied earthquake areas worldwide with masses of test equipment on the ground and many earthquakes/aftershocks to study. major lessons for other quake areas....on damage,buildings[rebuild/redesign,improvements/safety] ,aftermass effects, local body actions, infrastructure needs, ++. giant learning curves- Also the bad sides to things after disasters- scumbags

To avoid any confusion, I've added a date to the thread title and moved it to Environment.

It's no longer Lookout material.

Default Interesting and unexpected tsunami data

Thoughts from me..
source information at link

The afterquake studies of data have shown similar things to the big quake off Indonesia in 2004.

Multiple faults lines releasing at different (very close timing- seconds after each quake) times and at different scales of magnitude in a very short time frame causing different degrees of tsunami waves heights and timings at many coastal points. This also seems to have been an underwater landslide somewhere off the coast of the earthquake zone (Kaikoura Canyon) that moved large amounts of water, The coastal trench is very close to the coast and drops off quickly in to the trench.

This has really awakened the Scientists to the major tsunami risks in the area and how quick things could happen.
Quote:
Along the coast close to the Needles and Hundalee faults, the tsunami had likely been onshore within a few minutes of the shake.
one major problem after the 7.8 quake on 14 nov was how slow tsunami warnings got out, at between 15mins and 2 1/2 hours later. Some coastal Christchurch city areas never got a warning. Too many levels of government in the civil defense warning system and too slow to act. This is being looked at by the NZ gov.

Quote:
"An interesting puzzle here is that if you look at the Kaikoura tide gauge and what happened on that morning, the water level drops steadily for 25 minutes before coming up again to a first peak about 40 minutes after the quake.
"Those times are quite long. To me that implies there is quite a large area of deformation offshore, suggesting more faults may be involved than those two," he said.
This all implies in a coastal area after a quake you should leave the low-lying areas as soon as the quake is felt and stay at higher ground for 3 or more hours after the first quake.
