1-3m tsunami forecast for a section of coast near fukushima. Crappy, but well within what they're used to dealing with.

Tsunami warnings for evacuation in the Fukushima area are ongoing. Quite scary warnings like, "remember the great east Japan quake. You are not safe, flee to high ground and buildings. Help the elderly, children and disabled". There has been an initial small tsunami in some ports and expect it to be followed by other bigger ones up to 3meters. They are also giving reports on three nuclear plants saying no change noted yet. Also saying the radiation readings in Dai ichi plant in Fukushima are the same...but if they get hit by a tsunami... They jus removed the inner shielding a few weeks ago to continue work on the plant....

There have already been several after shocks in the area ... the people in Fukushima area are so traumatized from the big quake, I can't imagine how awful this is for them.

The water coolant system in reactor 3 in Fukushima is down. They are saying there is no immediate danger as the water in the tanks will suffice for right now.... Hmmm. If Tepco is reporting that much I'm actually more concerned as they aren't ever very forthcoming.

They are reporting that they don't know why the cooling system is down. Current temp is 28 centigrade, danger level is around 65 and it will take about a week to get to that temp.

NHK reporting cooling system for pool holding spent fuel from the No. 3 reactor of Fukushima Daini (not Daiichi) power plant has stopped..
Daini NP, that's the other plant down the coast.

It's not be a problem, If need be they can just add water to the pool to make up for that evaporates.

They are reporting that Tepco has restarted the cooling system though they are still unsure why it went down. No visible leakage.

They are still warning of tsunami danger along the coast.

The EQ measuring system is different in the U.S. and Japan. There's always some confusion about the magnitude.

From Breaking News:
The Japan Meteorological Agency has increased the magnitude of the earthquake off Fukushima to 7.4, while the United States Geological Survey downgraded the magnitude to 6.9

1.4-meter tsunami reported in Sendai, Japan - @W7VOA

Tsunami warning now in effect for Japan's Miyagi Prefecture; Fukushima remains under warning; advisories in effect for coastal areas to the north and south - JMA

Tokyo Electric Power Company announces 1-meter tsunami arrives at nuclear plant in Fukushima; no damage reported - @KjeldDuits

NHK reports more than 2,500 spent fuel rods in Fukushima, Japan, Daini power plant storage pool, where cooling has stopped; would take 7 days for temperatures to reach risky levels - @HirokoTabuchi

Officials: Fukushima Diani nuclear power plant spent fuel pool cooling system is resuming - NHK

30-cm tsunami reported on Hachijo-jima Island, Japan - NHK

Tokyo Electric Power Company: Fukushima Daiichi plant remains safe after earthquake, confirms Daini plant cooling pump resumed after earlier halt; 2nd tsunami wave hit, but was not very high - NHK

Things have calmed down finally. Still having some aftershocks..a few of which we feel here in Tokyo but not too bad. My main concern now that the tsunami threat is passed is the nuclear power plant...hopefully not too much extra damage there.

Now, how I almost died in my sleep...again. I "heard" the earthquake alarm and just incorporated it into my dream. In my dream I was in a hotel and I calmly gathered my things and went out to a large open field where I was safe as the quake hit. Good thing my husband woke up and woke me too!
Of course there isn't anywhere to run so we sat on the bed and waited for it to pass...safe a place as anywhere really as nothing nearby to fall on us. Our emergency suitcase is by the front door if we need to evacuate.

Kid #2 is likely going to do a year abroad his junior year (2017-2018). I know these things happen and life (usually) goes on, but I'll be doing a paranoid mom freak-out spasm if there are any similar events when he's there. Maybe Japan can take a year's vacation from the ring of fire?

Glad you didn't get shaken too badly, Lisa!
