Default Controversial new theory that could rewrite physics passes its first test

Quote:
Einstein's theory of gravity cannot account for everything in our universe
So scientists have speculated that an invisible 'dark matter' exists to fill the gaps
Dark matter particles have been searched for but have never been found
But a new theory rewrites theories of gravity, claiming dark matter does not exist
This has been tested for the first time, and the first evidence supports the theory
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...sses-test.html

Our understanding of gravity, which has held strong for over 100
years, could be wrong. Now an independent study of more than
30,000 galaxies found evidence to back the theory

Not that I am qualified to speak to the veracity of this new theory, but I have always felt that the idea of both "dark matter" and "dark energy" were wrong.

Agreed Alan. Too much of a fudge factor that "must be there even though we can't find it" for my liking.

Torture numbers enough and they'll say anything you want them to say...

And in 200 years, high school students will giggle at the absurd things people used to believe in the 20th/21st Century.

Man, to name a hypothesis after yourself means you are the biggest egoist ever or you are a nut.

Overthrow Einstein and the MSM is writing a piece on it. Let's see the research and let it get chewed on by the scientific community for a few years.

But I am sure Einstein would say:

I'm sure Einstein would have expected us to find the needed matter by now, and IMHO would have been willing to move along by this point.

The mathematics behind the Standard Model have become so tortured that one has to wonder if they shouldn't just tear it all up and start with a completely new model. AFAIK, all the "new" models have just been rehashings of the Standard Model to date.

Adding new particles and forces each time observations don't jibe with predictions is like a bad haircut. A little tweak here, a little tweak there. Pretty soon, the result is monstrous (and embarrassing). Or a crossword puzzle - if you have a few letters wrong and continue to try to solve it, it keeps getting worse with each new word you add.

One has to think that when they get it right, it will be relatively simple and undeniable; just like past breakthroughs such as relativity.

Apparently the originator of this ''science'' ( cough , cough ) has a history
of fanciful scientific claims .

Here is one such example ...
Quote:
Note that about 7 years ago, Erik Verlinde started the claim that gravity is
an entropic force. Well, it can't be an entropic force because whenever
entropic forces act, the entropy goes strictly up so the entropic forces are
intrinsically irreversible – while a comet may be closer to the Sun,
further from the Sun, closer to the Sun, and reverse things just fine.
Also, it's not possible that the number of microstates attributed to a
pair of objects depends on their distance: such an assumption would
destroy interference in the gravitational field which has been
experimentally demonstrated to exist using neutrons.
Quote source found here .

Wouldn't this be a controversial new HYPOTHESIS?

It takes testing and confirmation for an hypothesis to become a theory..,

Journalists (and a lot of laypeople **coughcoughDHcoughcough**) think they are the same thing, and synonymous with "guess".

Having apparently passed the initial tests performed it is moving from "hypothesis" to "potential new theory."

Naturally further testing is called for.

The more extraordinary a hypothesis the more extraordinary the evidence required to accept it.

We'll see.
