Odd place to have one this size. I figured it was the Long Valley Caldera when I heard on the "California/Nevada border" location on the radio.

Feather, AB is fine. He did feel them though.

I was thinking that the spot is sort of close to the Mammoth Lakes area, which gets active every once in a while. I see now that Hawthorne is farther north-east.

Hi, I was at the PC when the first temblors hit.

I felt 5 in about 12 minutes.

Quakes are fun! As long as they don't break anything.

The first shock, I "woke up." "Huh? What's that?" Looking around to see what the cats had done. It felt like a cat had bumped my chair leg, but then I realized it seemed like the whole kitchen got bumped in one shock.

It was so minor I couldn't tell it was a quake, but it perked up my attention.

The second quake came only about a minute later, and this was a strong one! It felt like the house had been put on a gimbal and given a big swirl. It rolled, and rolled, and rolled! My wife yells, "Honey!!!" from the bedroom. (She was already half alseep.) The cats ALL perked up. Two darted around, one sat up with big eyes, and started looking all over. The last one jumped down from somewhere..,

Then the third shock came. This was another little quiver. Hardly noticeable had it not been for the first two.

I went in to ask if the DW was okay. She said, "We just had an earthquake." DUH!!

I went back to sit down at the PC gain, and BOOM!!! The second big one hit. This one really shook a lot.., Windows rattled, stuff all over my desk started moving around. The Glenlivet and glass of tonic water actually slid around on the desk while sloshing. Me? "Wide eyed," wondering how bad this shake was going to get. About a five minute delay between the first two big ones.

Settling down again.., But wait. {Quiver, quiver, quiver} PAUSE!!

BOOM!!! A Third fairly big jolt. There was only 4 minutes between the last one. Then another quiver about a minute later.

WOW!!

About that time, I decided I would post to Facebook. I logged in and posted my history of events. I immediately got a cautionary reply from a friend who thought ANY earthquake was a terrible thing.., He was a Bangladeshi I had made friends with around Thanksgiving. An interesting guy, and he was online at that hour.

But that was just the start of the evenings fun! I started searching out my old favorite USGS websites and found a good one. It was a custom site that followed the USGS feed, but posted data more quickly.

http://quakes.globalincidentmap.com/

I started refreshing that one every few minutes. I only felt one more little quiver right after that, but more was to come!!

Once on Facebook, I decided to see if the local news station had anything up, and as it happens, the KCRA News3 weatherguy was just starting a LiveFeed on Facebook. Mark Finan! He did a great job coordinating all the citizen reports on the quake swarm.

Right after I started following that, BOOM, another real strong hit. The Facebook Feed had a lot of people reporting shaking on this one. It was recorded at 1:13 local time, but people felt it at around 1:17 (me too.)

So then I got a snapshot of the action:

Neat, eh!!

By the time I decided it was all over, we had about 20 temblors, ranging from magnitude 1.0 to magnitude 5.7!! Very exciting!!

Today, I captured the history for the location and the last three days here is the picture of the swarm:

Quite a little cluster!!

An interesting thing about this swarm was where it struck. Hawthorne Nevada is the site of an interesting Army Base:

http://www.jmc.army.mil/Installations.aspx?id=Hawthorne

Their Mission is as follows:
Quote:
Mission: Hawthorne Army Depot (HWAD) stores conventional munitions, demilitarizes and disposes of unserviceable, obsolete and surplus munitions; and maintains serviceability through inspection and renovation to ensure munitions readiness.
So you know what that means? they are blowing shit up all the time. During the summer months I can hear the detonations all the way over here in Auburn California! Every weekday, between 11:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. there would be two to five long double boom detonations as the dispose of 20 tons of ordinance at a time.

I thought I was crazy at first, hearing all this. Wondering what it was. FInally I found this neat Facebook Group:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/290611704417119/

Check them out!!

Did the ammo destruction have anything to do with the earthquakes? Who knows.

I bet the folks on the army base went NUTS. There is some speculation at the FaceBook group about any correlation.

Nice YouTube on this.., (Sort of a doomsday Seer runs this website.)

Cute!!

edit:

This cluster has produced 195 earthquakes in the two days since it started!! The second picture above shows that much!

The YouTube video goes into the Mammoth Lakes SUPERVOLCANO connection to this swarm of quakes.

Of course his video is pretty much SPECULATION.

There are a series of updates to the first video about all this.., At this YouTube channel:

My daughter and several of my friends felt them. Me? I was hopped up on cold medication and missed all the excitement!
