Default Michigan Ghost plane crashes east of Marathon (Northern Ontario)

Weird, weird, weird. Rented out of Ann Arbor, MI, must have been on autopilot across Lake Superior. Ran out of gas and crashed. I used to live in Marathon, it's on Superior's north shore. Crash was apparently Tuesday, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) found it Wednesday. No pilot, no footprints. U of M police handling a missing person report in relation to the crash.

Hmmm...

Quote:
MARATHON – Investigators remain baffled as to what happened to a student pilot who rented a plane that later crashed in the Northern Ontario woods.

Officials with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada confirmed the pilot, who rented the plane in Ann Arbor, Mich. last week, was a Chinese national who exited the plane at some point between takeoff and the crash landing, which occurred late last Wednesday night.

A little more info from AvWeb:

Ann Arbor Ghost 172 Crashes In Ontario

Quote:
Local police reported the plane was empty, there were no tracks in the snow, no gas in the tanks and the autopilot was on. The crash site is about 400 NM from Ann Arbor, pretty close to the full-tanks range of the 172.

The University of Michigan Police have reported the aircraft is related to a missing person case they’re working on. They’re also not releasing any details of that investigation except to say that the plane was rented.

What happened to the pilot of Cessna 172? Mystery surrounds the fate of student missing from crash site after police say he wasn't in the plane at the time of impact

Pilot, believed to be a graduate student at the University of Michigan, rented single-engine aircraft at the Ann Arbor Airport on Wednesday
Flight plan listed Harbor Springs, Michigan, as its destination, but the plane crashed 285 miles away outside Manitouwadge, Canada
Cockpit was empty and there were no footprints in snow around the wreckage
The plane does not have a roof hatch and was not designed to carry parachutes

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...h-Ontario.html

'We were unable to locate the whereabouts of the pilot,' said
Sgt. Peter Leon of the Ontario police. The pilot, a graduate student
at the University of Michigan, still has not been found

When I was a student pilot I was doing touch and go's in a Cessna. The door fell off on takeoff. (80 mph, about 300' off the ground when the door just swung open, ripped off, and fell into the swamp.) I was belted in but my instructor freaked out, bear hugged my legs, and wouldn't let go. (A conundrum for him as he could not fly or even see what I was doing while he was basically laying across my lap.) I thought it was rather funny at the time. I had no intention of leaving the plane and aside from the wind was able to fly the landing pattern and execute a standard landing without issue.

Rented planes are OLD... and in bad shape (we had pet names like, Bucket of Bolts). If his door popped open and he fell out on a turn, it could just slam shut again and keep flying.

Oh, and "not designed to carry parachutes" doesn't mean he didn't bring one with him. I'd rather picture that than an unplanned dive into Lake Huron.

fb, what would the remaining belt look like? Wouldn't it display damage if he fell out on a turn? Unless a latching mechanism failed, but that may be visible as well?

I'm wondering about the area it crashed in, and if it is so damaged that immediate analysis of the door and rest of the plane are complicated by the crash. That area is *generally* heavily wooded.

If he was belted in he shouldn't have fallen out at all.

There's a lot of turbulence in the summer months when the air is hot. Flying in the cold air of winter can be smooth as silk. It would be exceedingly stupid for a pilot to remove his seatbelt at any time. One bump and he can hit his head, be flung around the cabin, even lose his seating... but some people are stupid enough to do it.

My theory is that he intentionally jumped.

Now, whether or not he had a parachute is another matter...

I agree, likely over Lake Huron.

REVEALED: Pilot, 27, who was missing from the site of plane crash in Canada is believed to have jumped out mid-flight in an apparent act of suicide

Xin Rong, 27, rented a single-engine aircraft at Ann Arbor Airport on Wednesday
Flight plan listed Harbor Springs, Michigan, as its destination, but the plane crashed outside Manitouwadge, Canada
Cockpit was empty and there were no footprints in snow around the wreckage
Police said it was unlikely the pilot was in the plane at the time of the crash
The University of Michigan, where Rong was a PhD student, issued a statement saying they 'believe his actions likely were an act of self-harm'
Rong's body has not been recovered, and active searches have been suspended

If true, it is a spectacular way to commit suicide.
And it takes guts to jump out of a plane without a parachute.
My sphincters contract just by the thought of that.
He could have jumped off a roof somewhere.

Just speculation on my part, but if he did suicide it may be he did it the way he did so his body would not be found.
