Default 'Mountain of God' Volcano Preparing to Erupt

The East African peak looms over a modern city as well as three major sites featuring signs of early humans.

Quote:
An active volcano in northeastern Tanzania known to the Maasai as the “Mountain of God” has been quietly rumbling—and it is showing signs that an eruption is imminent.

Known as Ol Doinyo Lengai, the 7,650-foot-tall peak is the only known active volcano that belches out lava rich with a type of rock called carbonatite. This thin, silvery lava can flow faster than a person can run. (Read more about the volcano from our January 2003 issue.)

The volcano is some 70 miles from the city of Arusha and is known for its proximity to some of the world’s most important paleoanthropological sites. Ol Doinyo Lengai is less than 70 miles from the famed Olduvai Gorge, a collection of 3.6-million-year-old hominin footprints at a site called Laetoli, and a “dance hall” of ancient Homo sapiens footprints at a site called Engare Sero.
The rest at the National Geographic.

Strangest Magma on Earth: Carbonatites of Ol Doinyo Lengai

The white areas are weathered carbonatite lava while darker areas
are fresh lavas.

There is some evidence accumulating that Global Cooling has now
started , as predicted by a variety of scientists.

However it is too early to be sure , but if true , there is likely to be a surge
in volcanic eruptions and earthquakes triggered by the new conditions.

Earthquakes you say? Gonna wax my board and head for the waves, Surf Yuma baby!

---------- Post added at 01:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:07 PM ----------

In all seriousness, when the Northridge quake struck, I was working for Schein Pharmaceutical, in Safety & Security. We were told to expect 10,000 refugees a day within 30 days of Cali getting hit with the big one. That was then, double or even triple that number today.

We cannot do it. At the Phoenix Fire Academy there are bunkers of gear purchased with the intent to never use it in AZ. The equipment sits on standard military Ro-Ro pallets, ready to be loaded in to whatever touches down first. It is all meant for Cali. It will not be enough.

For us 'the big one' would mean the 'Lower Mainland' of British Columbia (everything west of the mountains) and Vancouver Island. That's fully a tenth of Canada's population that would be devastated or directly and seriously impacted for infrastructure if we had a disastrous quake. And it would take out pretty much all of the major logistical hubs west of Calgary. I cannot even begin to think of what we would do if and when we get a major earthquake on the west coast...
