Phew - that article is a punch in the gut, isn't it? It puts faces to a problem I'm genuinely struggling to understand.

Why are some of us wired so that life only seems... doable when under the influence of substance of choice or habit of choice; recognizing that addiction can take many forms?

There are so many stories out there about how life changed & people felt content, at peace, happy... after the 1st time they used, drank, gambled, shopped - whatever but especially substance abuse.

I accept a certain percentage of the population will always be prone to addiction but why does the problem seem to be growing? Or... are we simply more aware these days because of how fentanyl &/or other synthetics are leading to so many overdoses?

How in hell do we slow this down, reduce the toll it takes on so many lives?

Yes it is. I almost couldn't catch my breath.

I don't know why addiction is getting worse. It seems to be here. People are not happy, they feel hopeless. Why not do drugs? You can at least feel good then. Until you start coming down.

I don't know if there is any way to slow it down.

People DO feel hopeless & helpless right now. 'The Great Stabilizers of Life' - jobs, family, security... all are missing, lacking or not up to what we grew up learning to expect. Everything seems to be changing too fast & we're scrambling to catch up.

I think too many have given up or don't, never have had the tools to adjust to rapid change. They're struggling to just make it through lives they increasingly find miserable. They're constantly stressed by job uncertainty, rising bills, fractured families.

Drugs seem an easy, if temporary way to self soothe.

Many causes I think. Feeling of powerless/inept in an increasingly complex world. Feeling isolated and disconnected in a world where people are spending more time in their homes and less in the community. No sense of purpose or being useful due to job losses from increased automation. Hopelessness due to all of the foregoing. For some, simple boredom as there really is no need to struggle much anymore to obtain the basic necessities.

I hate to say it, but IT is at the root of a lot of this. Not all of it, but certainly isolation, the sense of powerlessness and futility and no sense of purpose. It is just so easy nowadays to coast along by oneself in a gray ooze of everything being "so-so", not anything too dramatic to worry about, but not much to strive for either.

I think for some people, especially those close to our general age range, part of the problem is waking up one gray day and saying, "Is this all there is?"

Hope and dreams unfulfilled, paths not taken, too many shit storms for one lifetime, loss of friends and family, realization of one's own mortality...

For some people, loss of hope for the future makes suicide the slow way seem like a viable option.

Well, here's to her winning the struggle and finding her particular thing to strive for. It sure ain't an easy path. Sounds like she is well on her way, though.
